About Kara

Welcome to my blog! I’m so glad you’re here!

My name is Kara and I’m a Registered Dietitian foodie. I’m a young professional, passionate about cooking food that tastes good, but is also (usually) healthy for you, too.

I’m a Midwest girl through and through. I grew up in small-town Iowa (like population-of-100 small), moved just two hours away to go to college, and stayed there for six years to earn my Bachelors in Dietetics and Masters in Nutritional Science. But I wasn’t quite done with school, and certainly not the Midwest. I moved to Illinois for a year to do my dietetic internship (a mandatory internship in order to complete the many steps of becoming an RD). Fate would have it that I would find my husband during that year (that’s another story for another time), who happened to also live in the Midwest…in Madison, Wisconsin. So after a year of being in Illinois, I moved on up to Wisconsin, passed the exams to become an RD, got married, and settled into life as a wife and an RD.

Growing up in the Midwest, food was always the central part of every gathering. I love the traditions, memories, and nostalgia that food can bring. Now as an RD living in Wisconsin with my husband, Philip, I still enjoy these foods I grew up with and don’t feel guilty doing so. I can enjoy nutrient-rich foods or a chewy, chocolate brownie just the same, but am mindful of what I’m eating—making sure to enjoy every bite I take. Having a no diet mentality is key and maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps me to keep enjoying the Midwest fare.

I love cooking and baking in the kitchen (which my husband also appreciates and benefits from!), combining both Midwest classics with simple, healthy improvements (some of the time!). I hope to share some of the things I’m cooking up in my Midwest kitchen with you along with some helpful and nutritious tips and tricks…and of course a little bit of life, too.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you stick around!
